New York tightens up mental health coverage

WBFO News File Photo

Governor Andrew Cuomo says there will be zero tolerance for insurance companies who try to shirk their obligations.

Last month Cuomo signed a law that required insurers to cover initial inpatient drug treatment. New York regulators are making sure insurers do not discriminate against people with mental health disorders or addictions who need to be treated.

In a letter, the Department of Financial Services reminded health insurers that they are required to issue coverage for those treatments as they would with any other medical and surgical care. The letter also informed insurers that the department will be reviewing their treatment limitations for compliance.
