Cleanup of Black Rock Channel underway

Chris Caya WBFO News

The cleanup of the Black Rock Channel in Buffalo is underway, thanks to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. Lt. Col. Karl Jansen,  the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers District Commander says in total, the project will be about 250,000 cubic yards of sediment.

"How do you wrap your hands around what that means? Well if we were to place that into dump truck loads that's about 20,000 dump truck loads. So you could think of a convey extending from Buffalo to Rochester with that amount of sediment. That's a big project," Jansen said.

According to Rep. Brian Higgins, the GLRI allocated $2.179 million for the dredging.

Higgins says it provides economic and environmental returns cleaning up decades of old industrial contaminants.
