Man gets 18 years for Wegmans stabbing

A Buffalo man who stabbed his estranged wife at a Wegmans store in January 2012 has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.Awet Gebreyesus, 33, learned his fate Tuesday morning. Gebreyesus pleaded guilty to attempted murder in March. 

Prosecutors say the refugee from Eritrea stabbed his wife Luam Abraha in the head and upper body as they were exchanging custody of their son. She survived, despite a severe brain injury. The boy was not injured. The incident occurred in the entryway of the Wegman store on Amherst Street. 

Gebreysesus faces deportation following his prison term. He has been ordered to have no further contact with his wife or son.
