TORONTO — The lawyer for an Ontario man arrested under an anti-terrorism law says it's not clear if his client will face any actual terrorist charges.Anser Farooq says he doesn't know what prompted the investigation into 23-year-old Kevin Omar Mohamed.
Mohamed was picked up on Saturday under a little-used criminal code provision known as the Fear of Terrorism offense, which allows police to arrest someone on the grounds they believe a person may commit a terrorist offense.
A charge is not laid under the rarely used provision -- the only criminal charges Mohamed faces are carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace. Farooq says the weapon police allege is illegal is a knife.
Farooq appeared in a Toronto-area court with his client on Saturday on the allegations and said the Crown indicated it wasn't sure if police would charge Mohamed with any terror-related offenses. Farooq said police may want Mohamed to agree to a court order to abide by certain conditions.
It wasn't clear what Ontario community Mohamed was from or precisely where he was arrested.
