Theatre Talk: Guido

Theatre Critic Jim Santella reviews "Guido" by Tony Vitale. (Adapted from the movie "Kiss Me Guido.") It continues through October 9th at the New Phoenix Theatre On The Park in Buffalo. By Jim Santella and Anthony Chase, WBFO

Buffalo, NY – Theatre: "Guido" by Tony Vitale. (Adapted from the movie "Kiss Me Guido.")

What: Karaoke Musical

Rating: 3 Stars (Five Star System)

Where: New Phoenix Theatre On The Park, 95 Johnson Park. 853-1334

When: Through October, 9th.

Plot: "Guido" is derogatory term for a stereotypical macho Italian male. Frank is a "Guido" from the Bronx who wants to move out of his parents' home and into a New York City apartment to pursue a career in show business. The wannabe answers an ad for a room mate only to discover his intended roomie is a gay choreographer. What follows is a predictable clash as strait and gay worlds collide.

Pros & Cons: The minimal plot is goosed along by karaoke versions of 1980?s dance/disco songs ("I Will Survive," "YMCA," "I Am What I Am," etc.) reminiscent of "Mama Mia."

It is the energy and vocal appeal of performers like Kerrykate Abel as the randy landlady, Meryl, Ryan David O?Byrne as Frank, his best friend Joey played by Josh Snyder, and the over-the-top queen schtick of Guy Tomassi that keeps this confection entertaining. Roger Griffiths, Jr. is also good as the choreographer.

However, this karaoke musical with its forgettable dialogue is too stereotypical to be taken seriously even though director Richard Lambert keeps the hi-jinks frothy and fast paced. The supporting cast is sufficient.

Summary: Need to revisit the 1980's? Get those stacked shoes you have hidden in your closet and boogie on down to the Phoenix.
