Pro hockey set a penalty record 20 years ago in a game between Ottawa, Philadelphia

STEVE INKSEEP, HOST:

Good morning, I'm Steve Inskeep. Pro hockey set a record 20 years ago today when fights broke out during a National Hockey League game between the Ottawa Senators and the Philadelphia Flyers. This was the record - players spent 419 minutes in the penalty box. Twenty players were thrown out. These days, the game is less violent. This season fights are way down from 2004 - there have only been 229 of them. It's MORNING EDITION. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
