Buffalo State College has announced that its Great Lakes Center is the recipient of more than $3 million federal dollars to fund research on benthic invertebrates, such as zooplankton, and mysid crustaceans in the Great Lakes.

The research is in cooperation with the Cornell University Biological Field Station, which will receive the balance of the $6.7 million grant to fund joint research through the beginning of 2028.

The money comes from the Environmental Protection Agency's Great Lakes National Program Office.

The benthic invertebrates are organisms that live on the bottom of the lakes and help indicate the biological conditions of the water they are in. This information is used to make policy decisions about the lakes.

The grants will help fund Buff State graduate student researchers, undergraduate technicians, and independent research opportunities.
