Buffalo Bishop Edward Kmiec discussed the road to sainthood for the Venerable Nelson Baker during his trip to the Vatican.
Bishop Kmiec returned Thursday night following a 10-day trip to Rome. He spoke with reporters at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
The Bishop's visit, called “ad limina”, included a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI and visited a number of Vatican congregations, including the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, which is studying the sainthood cause of Venerable Father Baker.
20 bishops from all eight dioceses in New York state took part in the visit, including Bishop Edward M. Grosz, auxiliary bishop of Buffalo.
The Bishop said during his meeting at the Congregation for the Causes of Saints he received an update on the status of a possible miracle connected to Father Baker.
"There was the examination on the authenticity of the miracle by three doctors and two out of the three passed on it, so it goes on now to another review by a larger group of doctors, then it goes to some theologians and then hopefully to the board of bishops and cardinals. If they really feel this is an authentic miracle it could be blessed and it could be possibly in a year or so," said Bishop Kmiec.
Bishop Kmiec also noted that one of the highlights of his visit to Rome was celebrating Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica.
