Proposed solution to prevent storefront crashes

Protective barrier

By Eileen Buckley

Amherst, NY – In wake of the tragic crash through a restaurant window, an Amherst Town councilmember is a proposing a new local law that would require barriers.

Lawmaker and Deputy Town Supervisor Guy Marlette issued a resolution to the Amherst Town Board.

"To provide protection obviously to the patrons that are inside the establishment as well as to hopefully prevent ht tragedy that occurred over the weekend," said Marlett.

Marlett tells WBFO News his resolution calls on the Town Planning Department to create new regulations to require protective structures to be placed between parking lots and a place of business to provide public safety.

"I think that while these regulations maybe viewed to a business as burdensome, it makes them safer. I think it makes the patrons more comfortable to be in the establishment. If it prevents one death, I think it is worth it," said Marlett.

The resolution will be before the Amherst Town Board Monday, September 26, 20011 at 7 p.m.

Over the weekend Joseph and Kathyrn Bennett died after a car drove through the window of the Cheeburger-Cheeburger restaurant on Niagara Falls Boulevard. Their 13-year-old son was also hurt.

On Tuesday there was yet another store front crash. A 73-year-old Cheektowaga woman smashed her vehicle into a liquor store on Kensington Avenue. No one was hurt. She was charged with D.W.I.
