Buffalo, NY – President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster in New York after Hurricane Irene, freeing up disaster recovery funding.

26-counties in New York have major damage left behind from Hurricane Irene. There have been at least six confirmed fatalities.

WBFO's Eileen Buckley talked with retired ABC news broadcaster Ed Gullo. Gullo and his wife live in an A-frame cabin in Maplecrest, New York next to a stream.

Gullo said most frightening was the pounding rain and wind during the height of the storm. Gullo watched as the water level rose and his house shudder as water was tumbling large boulders downstream.
