Buffalo, NY – The man who heads the federal government's immigration services was in Buffalo Friday and took some time to meet with reporters to discuss immigration trends and issues.

The Homeland Security Department recently launched an initiative aimed at encouraging immigrants who might be interested in starting a business in the U.S.

Alejandro Mayorkas, Director of the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services, says the problem is getting immigrants who qualify to come here.

Many foreigners with the talent and skills to open a business here, he explained, are not necessarily interested in coming here anymore.

Mayorkas also acknowledged rising competition from foreign companies that may be more attractive to foreign entrepreneurs. The initiative recently launched by Homeland Security seeks to clear up misunderstandings about how to qualify for entry into the U.S., as Mayorkas explained.

There are several Visa classifications where immigrants may qualify to enter the U.S. and into its business community.
