Buffalo, NY – The Erie County Legislature adjourned a redistricting meeting Wednesday afternoon after both Republican and Democratic lawmakers could not agree on a map.
Legislators say there were still too many technical errors that must be worked before voting.
County lawmaker Daniel Kozub said they felt it would be wrong to vote on a map that they did not agree on.
"It would be senseless to try to go ahead and try to approve a local law that we know that there's errors in it," said Kozub.
The next scheduled meeting on redistricting is set for June 16. But Kozub is hoping to meet sooner. Legislature Chairwoman Barbara Miller-Williams has the power to call for a meeting before the 16th.
"The chairwoman has the power to call a special meeting and then it will be up to a vote...I would hope she would call for a special meeting before the 16th because people have to go out and get signatures in the districts that they're running even though they don't know what districts and what boundaries there are," said Kozub.
Even if lawmakers come to an agreement on a map the County Executive, still has the power to veto it.
The Buffalo Common Council unanimously reached agreement and approved a new redistricting map last week.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown announced that he is holding a public hearing on Monday, June 6th, 2011 at noon regarding the proposed Reapportionment plan.
The hearing will be held in City Hall, Room 209. If residents are unable to attend the meeting, they can submit comments online at the city Website, www.city-buffalo.com.
