Buffalo, NY – Many residents of Sunset Bay were evacuated to a Red Cross Shelter Monday after the Cattaraugus Creek flooded.
Roads remain closed Tuesday morning to traffic and although some freezing took place over night, officials say beneath that frozen surface, the flood waters -- as deep as 20 inches -- have begun to recede.
Firefighter Mark Dietzen said the Cattaraugus is a temperamental creek that can spill its banks quickly.
This is the worst flooding in Sunset Bay in the past five years.
The National Weather Service is maintaining flood warnings for northeast Chautauqua and Southwest Erie County until 10 o'clock Tuesday morning.
There was no major flooding reported in Buffalo, but City officials did close the Stevenson Street Bridge Monday near Cazenovia Park as a precaution. However, City crews reopened the bridge Tuesday moring.
It was closed Monday as a precaution because of ice jam flooding and a high debris field along Cazenovia Creek.
