Cherry Creek, NY – An historic pavilion in Chautauqua County was destroyed by fire Monday night at the Cockaigne Ski Center.
A Chautauqua County Highway Department snow plow driver spotted the blaze and reported it to Cherry Creek Fire.
The Cockaigne Ski Center was fully involved when firefighters arrived at the scene around 10:30 p.m. Monday evening.
The landmark, award winning structure was originally built in the early 1960's in Austria, and was purchased in 1964 for the New York World's Fair. It cost $1 million.
Cockaigne purchased the building the next year for $3,000, took it apart, and transported the pieces by rail to Jamestown, where it was reassembled.
No injuries have been reported. An investigation into the cause is underway.
