Buffalo, NY – The World Junior Hockey Championship wrapped up at HSBC Arena Wednesday night. Now that the tournament is over, local hockey fans will return their attention to the Buffalo Sabres and a potential sale of the team.
Channel 2 reported last week that Sabres management was delaying an announcement of the team's sale until after the World Juniors ended. They didn't want to draw attention away from the tournament.
Reports continue to circulate that Pennsylvania businessman Terry Pegula is planning to buy the Sabres.
So, we had this question Wednesday for Sabres Managing Partner Larry Quinn.
WBFO News: "Now that the tournament is ending, can we expect an announcement in the near future about any developments surrounding Sabres ownership?"
Quinn: "You guys will expect it, so anything I say can't change that. But we don't have any plans to make an announcement in the immediate future."
Regardless of whether the team is sold or not, Quinn did assure fans the Sabres are here to stay.
Officials of USA Hockey and the International Ice Hockey Federation were pleased with the Buffalo tournament. Attendance topped 330,000 -- the second highest total in the tournament's history.
The next time the US hosts the World Juniors will be in 2018. Quinn said he expects the Sabres will bid to once again host the tourney then.
