Buffalo, NY – A herd of mini buffalos are making a big impression, despite their size. Bids are already going high for the table top buffalos being auctioned off through this week.
You might recall the excitement that a much larger herd caused ten years ago. That stampede of 154 life-size buffalos, crafted by artists with wild imaginations, captivated the public's attention.
The public art project also raised $1.6 million. Committee member Sally Russell said these 12 inch high guys are a much more manageable herd, given the poor economy.
But she said the smaller size certainly doesn't mean the buffalos are short on creativity. Russell said there are landscaped buffalos, a slinky buffalo - and even a couple of buffalos on ice. One is autographed by all the Buffalo Sabres. Goalie Ryan Miller is depicted riding the other one.
Twelve of the buffalos are being auctioned live online through 9:00 P.M. Saturday. The rest of the herd will be "released" after a silent auction at the closing night gala. That event on Saturday is sold out. So, the online auction is the last chance for those not attending to own a piece of the herd - and raise money for cancer research at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
