Buffalo, NY – Western New York Congresswoman Louise Slaughter announced $4.6 million in federal funding for UB's Medical Department. The funds will be used to purchase a piece of high tech medical equipment.
The cyclotron allows researchers to take a closer look at molecular images. Researchers believe molecular imaging holds enormous promise for understanding disease.
Slaughter said this equipment will allow the worlds greatest minds to come and work right here in Buffalo.
"This form of imaging is the most sensitive and specific method for measuring molecular interactions and molecular pathways in life," said Slaughter.
UB president John Simpson said he believes this medical equipment will allow the university to be at the forefront of medical research.
"The cyclotron is an absolutely necessary piece of equipment for doing state of the art research and treatment for various kinds of diseases. Having one means that we enable our biomedical scientists to not only be at the forefront of research, but at the forefront of treatment," said Simpson.
