Buffalo, NY – A former University at Buffalo graduate and teacher from Erie Community College has been named to serve as the next prime minister of Somalia.

Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed replaces Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, who had a long-running feud with the president of the African nation and resigned last month.

The president of Somalia announced the appointment. Mohamed will be asked to name a Cabinet within one month.

A statement from the Somali government said Mohamed is a former Somali diplomat. According to the government's Website, he worked in the Somali Embassy in Washington from 1985 to 1988.

Mohamed taught conflict resolution and leadership skills at Erie Community College. He was a graudate of the University at Buffalo.

Dr. Ruth Meyerowitz, director of Graduate Studies at UB, tells WBFO News Mohamed earned his masters degree in June of 2009 from UB's American Studies Department. One of his professor's was Donald Grinde, chair of the American Studies and History Department at UB.
