Canisius College works to encourage city home ownership

Buffalo, NY – Canisius College is lending the city a hand in the creation of a new housing program.

Through the years Canisius purchased nearby homes off Main Street for student housing. Canisius College President John Hurley met with reporters to announce a new program.

"I think both he college and Hamlin Park taxpayers and community association agree that this is not a good, long-term strategy for this neighborhood," said Hurley.

The school will return eight houses it purchased over the years for future residential ownership. The college is partnering with Belmont Housing to repair, market and sell the homes.

"Belmont will oversee the renovation and sale of these properties...and together we will see to it that these properties are brought up to high standards that they have updated mechanical systems and attractive exteriors," said Hurley.

Hurley is convinced home ownership is a key ingredient to maintaining vital and vibrant neighborhoods. The school leader is hoping the city embraces its effort.

"I hope so. This is a very important neighborhood," said Hurley.

The School says it is working to move the neighborhood and city forward. In 2002, Canisius was the first to launch an employer assisted housing program which encourages employees to buy city homes.

The first two homes to be renovated and sold are on Humbolt Parkway and Glendale. Once sold, the new owners must agree to live in the home for at least 15 years after the date of purchase.
