Akron, NY – A historic bridge was reopened Wednesday afternoon in Akron Falls Park. The Parkview Drive bridge closed in 2003.

After years of deterioration, it was deemed unsafe. But it was replaced this summer with a replica of the original historic structure.

Erie County Executive Chris Collins appeared for Wednesday's oepning.

"I'm thrilled the County was able to rebuild this replica of the original Parkview Bridge in Akron. Akron Falls is a beautiful County park, and this bridge reopening will make it easier for taxpayers to access all that the all that this park has to offer," said Collins

State Senator Mike Ranzenhofer joined county officials for the reopening.

"After being closed for over seven years, it's great to see the Parkview Bridge re-opened for the residents of Akron," said Ranzenhofer.

Erie County Legislator Ray Walter said the bridge reconstruction was a top prioritie when he came into office.

"It's unfortunate that the bridge was closed for as long as it was, but I am very happy that it is now open. This project will benefit the residents of Akron and Newstead and will hopefully encourage Erie County residents to visit Akron Falls Park, one of Western New York's hidden jewels," said Walter.

The bridge replacement project cost approximately $1.7 million, 80% of which was paid for with federal dollars.

The original bridge was build in 1933.
