Buffalo, NY – An inmate at the Erie County Holding Center is on life-support at an area hospital after being found hanging last weekend in his cell.
Deputies found Edtition Thompson around 9:30 on Sunday night. Thompson had previously tried to take his life while in custody in April of 2009.
Sheriff Timothy Howard had placed Thompson under constant observation. But that status changed in the intervening year -- though Thompson was still housed as a difficult inmate.
Efforts to address the mental health concerns of inmates has been a driving force behind a lawsuit against the County filed by the US Justice Department.
