State Legislature passes bill to increase charter schools cap

State Assemblyman Sam Hoyt

By Mark Scott

Albany, NY – Both houses of the State Legisature approved a bill today to raise the cap on the number of charter schools in New York. The cap will rise from the current limit of 200 to 460.

The higher charter school cap is seen as a key part of the state's application for federal Race to the Top education funding. The deadline is this Tuesday.

"While certainly not perfect, (this bill) ensures that New York is in this race to win it and secure $700 million for our state," State Assemblyman Sam Hoyt said.

The state missed out on the first round of funding.
