Common Council approves 2010-11 city budget

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo Common Council Friday approved the city budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1st. The vote was unanimous.

Lawmakers made few changes to Mayor Byron Brown's recommended budget of $460.6 million. They preserved his recommended 2.7 percent reduction in property taxes.

Among the Council additions to the budget was $100,000 for a recreation and educational complex in South Buffalo. They also appropriated a similar amount to re-brand a portion of Hertel Avenue as "Little Italy."

Despite pleas for an increase, the Council did not increase the city's share of funding for Buffalo public schools.
