Buffalo, NY – The City of Buffalo has scrapped plans to begin immediately collecting the controversial occupancy tax.
The tax was repealed in 1976. Since then, homeowners were allowed to wait until their property was sold before paying any outstanding debt and accrued interest.
But last week, the city's Treasury and Collection's Division sent bills to roughly 3,000 homeowners. But city officials are now sayign the bill does not have to be paid until a sale or refinancing.
Mayor Byron Brown says he was not aware that the bills had been sent until his office began receiving complaints.
