Buffalo, NY – Hundreds of college students from many parts of New York are gathering at the University at Buffalo North Campus this weekend for a regional environmental summit.
Danielle Peters is an environmental studies major at UB. So, of course, the environment is very important to her. Last year, Peters traveled to Washington for something called "Power Shift '09," an environmental youth summit. And now she's bringing Power Shift to New York. She says the name is mean to speak about the growing number of youth who are pushing for sustainability.
"We want to learn about environmental issues, but we want to do something about the environmental issues that are going on," Peters said.
The students plan to begin their weekend congerence by protesting outside the corporate headquarters of US Energy Development Corporation in Getzville. They oppose the company's oil and gas drilling policies.
The highlight of the weekend comes Sunday when environmental activist Lois Gibbs will address the summit about the dangers posed by the toxic plastic PVC.
