Buffalo, NY – Mayor Byron Brown and County Executive Chris Collins declared this Sunday, April 11th "Holocaust Remembrance Day." The two elected leaders were joined by Holocaust survivors and their families at Collins' Rath Building office Wednesday.
Dr. Irwin Gelman, president of the Holocaust Resource Center of Greater Buffalo, said this Sunday's remembrance is an opportunity to share hope and comfort.
"Even though you could go through something totally horrible, you should continue to have hope, you should believe in the goodness of man, and there are people around you that will help you," Gelman said. "And what your job is then to do for the rest of your life, is to pass it forward to the next generation."
Gelman says it's painful to note that genocide continues to this day in such places as Darfur in Sudan. He says indifference to genocide should not be tolerated.
