Boarded up Statler Towers

Buffalo, NY – Another piece of the historic Statler building crumbled to the ground Thursday.

A small decorative cornice hit the ground along the West Genesee Street side of the boarder up Statler Towers mid-morning Thursday.

Mayor Brown is calling on the Statler's bankruptcy trustee to secure the building's exterior. He wants an immediate action plan to protect the public.

"I wanted the Statler Towers trustee, Morris Horwitz, to understand that I take the health and safety of our citizens very seriously," said Mayor Brown.

"On the advice of my Commissioner of Economic Development, Permit and Inspection Services, James Comerford, I informed Mr. Horwitz that he is required within five days to engage a firm to conduct an inspection of the building's exterior masonry," said Brown.

The Buffalo's Public Works Department closed off the West Genesee sidewalk immediately adjacent to the Statler from Franklin Street to Niagara Square. The sidewalk will remain closed until further notice.
