Amherst, NY – Just after 4:00 Tuesday afternoon, UB police received a call that a gunman might be in the Lockwood library. But no one was found and classes resumed Wednesday.
An unidentified student reported seeing a white male about 5'6" tall entering the library, carrying what looked like a rifle. The library was evacuated and classes were canceled for the night. Dozens of UB and Amherst police swept the library for more than three hours without locating the suspect.
UB Police Chief Jerry Schoenle says they had reason to take the report seriously. He says the person caught on camera had short brown hair, light facial hair and appeared to be carrying a long object under a navy pea coat.
Police and UB officials say the campus is safe and once again open for classes today. Extra patrols made the rounds of both campuses through the night. Police say they will be on the watch for any suspicious person, but are no longer actively searching.
