Amherst, NY – The Amherst Town Board unanimously approved downsizing legislation Tuesday that could cut the two positions from the governing body. The vote was 6-0.
Whether downsizing happens is now in the hands of voters who will decide the matter in a public referendum. If approved, two board seats would be eliminated over the next four years.
Despite that consensus, Amherst lawmakers say they personally oppose downsizing the Board.
Town Supervisor Barry Weinstein says the board's motivation is not saving money, but rather about placing the matter before the electorate.
