Strong Winds and Lake Effect Snow Batter Region

By WBFO News

Buffalo, NY – Strong winds, blowing snow and bitter wind chills are all part of the latest winter storm to make its way across Western New York.

A lake effect snow warning continues until 10:00 Thurday night for the Buffalo area, but will remain posted until 7:00am Saturday for areas south of Buffalo. There is also a high wind warning for the entire region until 7:00 tonight. Sustained winds in the range of 30-40 mph could gust to 60 mph today. Those winds are causing blizzard-like conditions and bringing visability to zero.

The latest forecast from the National Weather Service indicates the bands of lake snow are now centered south of Buffalo in the Boston Hills, East Aurora and into Wyoming County. Forecasters say the bands could meander as far north as West Seneca and Elma later Thursday.

The heavy lake effect snow closed most schools and school districts in the immediate Buffalo area, including Buffalo city schools.

Snow fall totals Thursday will range from 5-10 inches in the persistent snow areas, to very little in the immediate Buffalo area. Temperatures will fall from the upper 20s to the lower 20s.

There was an accident earlier this morning on the westbound 90 near Depew. Authorities say a bus rolled over. It's not clear if slick road, strong winds, or a combination of the two contributed to the rollover. Responding officers said it was hard just getting to the scene.

There were 15 people on the bus. Injuries have been reported. Some people were treated at the scene at least one person was taken to an area hospital.
