Friday Night Violence Kills One, Wounds Three Others in Buffalo

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – Buffalo police are investigating separate shooting incidents Friday evening, one that left a teenager dead.

Ferry-Fillmore District officers responded to a shooting at Fillmore Avenue and East Ferry Street that occurred around 9pm. Officers found David J. Hyshaw, 17, lying in a pool of blood on the sidewalk at 1256 East Ferry Street. He was rushed to Erie County Medical Center by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A second individual, Dewey A. Taylor, 16, also suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg and was treated at ECMC.

According to a statement released by Chief of Detectives Dennis Richards, the two shooting victims were standing in front of a house on Fillmore, when multiple gunshots were fired at them, by at least three black males, who approached on foot. The suspects were all described as wearing dark clothing.

Earlier Friday evening, Northeast District police responded to calls in the 200 block of Minnesota Avenue about shots being fired. Officers learned that the driver of an eastbound vehicle was struck by gunfire. A young girl was also struck in her leg, as she was in the driveway of a nearby house at the time multiple shots were fired.

Richards says both the driver and the girl were taken to Erie County Medical Center. Edward Battles, 17, has been identified as the operator of the car and is hospitalized in critical condition. The female bystander is 14 years old and sustained a fractured left femur in the shooting.

Anyone with information regarding either of these incidents is encouraged to contact the police department's confidential TIPCALL number -- 847-2255.
