Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo Fire Department is celebrating the swearing in of 58 new fire recruits. Friday's ceremony was a sharp contrast from last Friday's funerals of two fallen firefighters.
Families and firefighters gathered at the fire station on Virginia and Elmwood Avenue as the new recruits took their oath administered by Buffalo Police Commissioner Michael Lombardo.
Mayor Brown told those gathered it was a critically important day for the city.
Several firefighters were also promoted Friday, including a new division chief, battalion chief and captain. Nine were also promoted to Lieutenant.
Commissioner Lombardo told the new recruits since the tragic loss of two firefighters, the responsibility of fire fighting has grown.
