Buffalo, NY – Fierce thunderstorms rolled through parts of Western New York last night.
Heavy rains and powerful winds hit Erie and Niagara Counties. There was even a tornado warning issued in Allegany County just before 11 p.m. Thursday night. But the National Weather Service says it has not made a confirmation that a tornado touched down.
But across the border, in southern Ontario, the severe thunderstorms spawned tornadoes. Authorities have not yet confirmed reports that a fatality from Thursday's vicious storms in southern Ontario was a teenaged boy camping in Durham.
The severe weather also knocked out power to about 6,000 National Grid customers in Western New York, but most have been restored. The storms also caused outages to a few hundred residents in Cattaraugus County.
The heavy rains caused flooding in some metro Buffalo areas and brought down trees. Buffalo firefighters rescued a driver from a flooded out viaduct on Skillen Street in the City of Buffalo Thursday night.
Kenmore Avenue was closed in both directions between Military Road and Ontario Street in Tonawanda due to flooding, and sections of Sheridan Drive in Tonawanda were also flooded.
