Buffalo, NY – A group of labor leaders in the Buffalo area are publicly calling on Andrew Cuomo to run for Governor next year.

There's been a lot of speculation about Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. Statewide polls show he has significantly more support than embattled Governor David Paterson. But Cuomo has downplayed talk about running for governor. He told WBFO News two weeks ago that he plans to seek re-election as Attorney General. But 11 local labor leaders have co-signed a letter to Cuomo urging him to consider the top spot. Buffalo Teachers Federation President Philip Rumore says labor is clearly not pleased with Paterson's performance.
It's no surprise that labor and even some Democrats are privately concerned about Paterson's ability to win a statewide election next year. Even the Governor himself admits his popularity is sagging because of the state's continuing budget crisis. But this marks the first public call from a Democratic constituency group that he be replaced.
"Sometimes, you have to take a stand publicly for what you believe in" said Rumore.
The New York Times reported Monday that both Paterson and Cuomo met privately on Memorial Day for what was described as a cordial discussion. So, for now, Cuomo is proceeding delicately and is avoiding any overt politicking for Paterson's job.
