Buffalo, NY – Erie County's two jails have been harshly criticized in a 50-page report released this month by the US Justice Department.
The report says the jails violate the constitutional rights of inmates by failing to protect them from serious harm. Some inmates have complained of improper treatment, but county attorney Cheryl Green discounted their comments.
"These are inmates who lack credibility," Green said. "I think you have to consider the source when you hear of allegations like this."
The federal report has a number of recommendations for improving medical and mental health care.
The Erie County Sheriff's Department operates the holding center in downtown Buffalo and the correctional facility in Alden.
