Bufflao, NY – Third through eighth grade students in New York are doing a better job of meeting or exceeding state standards in Math. The State Education Department is reporting that the achievement rate from testing this year now stands at 86 percent, up from 81 percent in 2008.

While pleased, Education Commissioner Richard Mills says there's room for even more improvement.

In Buffalo, the achievement rate in Math for students in grades three through eight rose to 63 percent this year from the 2008 figure of 50 percent.

Meanwhile, the annual Business First school rankings continue to be released this week. For the fourth time in five years, Smallwood Elementary in Amherst has finished in first place.

At number two is South Davis Elementary School in Orchard Park. Third is Maple East in Williamsville, number four is Southern Tier Catholic in Olean, and Charlotte Avenue in Hamburg in fifth.
