Buffalo, NY – The City's Cold Case Squad has resolved a 34-year old murder case. 19-year old Michelle Dixon was shot to death while sleeping in her Buffalo home on May 20, 1975. But the case remained unsolved until an arrest on Monday.
55-year old Bernard Thomas of Buffalo has been charged with second degree murder. Bettie Muhammad is a cousin of the victim. She says after the family received some misinformation about the case, the file was reopened last summer.
Police then received a call from the victim's brother and reopened the case. Detectives conducted two interviews in March with Thomas and managed to collect his DNA. It later matched DNA saved from the murder.
Police Commissioner McCarthy Gipson says on Monday Thomas called police and was arrested. Police would not offer any details or possible motive for the shooting.
Muhammad says she believes Thomas was a friend of the victim. She says the family is "delighted" the murder has been solved.
