Buffalo, NY – One of the area's largest educators of international students is on alert for a potential Swine Flu outbreak locally. UB officials say they have a flu pandemic plan ready to go should there be a need.
The University has a population in Western New York of roughly 25,000 students. Officials say they are still doing a count of how many international students are from or travel through Mexico.
UB spokesman John Della Contrada said the good news is that, so far, there are not any suspected cases of Swine Flu. For right now, he said UB is keeping a careful watch. And they are are abiding by the travel advisory. If it is extended, Della Contrada said that could mean a small number of students might not be going home as soon as the semester ends.
"If there are international students who are affected we could make arrangements to have them stay on campus during the period in which time the travel warning is issued," said Della Contrada.
Right now, he said there are not any programs effected by the travel advisory. But that too could change if the outbreak continues and the advisory is extended into summer when a trip to Mexico is planned.
Della Contrada said they have had some calls to their clinics from students with questions about symptoms. But he said there are not any students suspected of having the virus, nor have any been tested.
