Albany, NY – Governor Paterson is telling department heads to ready plans for layoffs starting in July.
Paterson issued a letter to state workers on the time line. But Paterson also made a last-minute pitch for employees to pressure union bosses to make contract concessions.
The letter was issued to all state employees. Paterson is warning that he will move ahead with plans to layoff almost 9,000 workers. In the letter, Paterson noted that he does not want to see anyone lose their job, especially in the tough economic climate. But Paterson says it is part of the budget to reduce the state's deficit.
