Washington, DC – US Senator Charles Schumer says the new federal stimulus package includes about $1.6 billion for upstate counties in New York over the next two years. The package passed the House Wednesday night and now goes to the Senate for its approval.
Schumer provided what he says are the latest numbers for New York. He says the package has $737 million earmarked for Medicaid relief upstate. And $860 million in education aid heading our way.
During an appearance in the Buffalo area earlier this week, Schumer said local governments will especially benefit. But he cautioned it's not a panacea. Schumer said it won't keep state officials from having to make spending cuts.
Still, Schumer said there's "overwhelming consensus" among lawmakers that they should help bolster the finances of state and local governments.
