New York City, NY – Governor David Paterson is proposing a cut in the growth of school aid in the current fiscal year. His plan to eliminate billions of dollars in deficits was presented Wednesday morning at his Manhattan office.
Paterson says he's not calling for a cut in education aid but a reduction in the increase local school districts were scheduled to receive. Districts would see their rate of increase reduced from nine percent to five percent.
Paterson also proposes a $600 in tuition at the State University of New York, a 14 percent increase.
Paterson says he is not calling for an increase in the state income tax though some fees and assessments may be increased.
A special session of the State Legislature to address the state's fiscal crisis is scheduled for next Tuesday.
