UB Colleccts Books for Children

Buffalo, NY – The UB Professional Staff Senate begins a book drive Monday that could put thousands of books in the hands of children.

Dozens of collection boxes all over UB's three campuses stand waiting for generous donors. The goal of the drive is to collect enough books to put a dent in Buffalo illiteracy. At roughly 30 percent, Buffalo has one of the highest rates of illiteracy. The rate is about 20 percent for all of Erie County. Cherie Williams is a member of the UB organization that is sponsoring the drive. Williams said turning the statistics around is a challenge, especially during tough economic times when purchasing books becomes a low priority.

The PSS hopes to collect as many as 4,000 new or like-new books for children. They will be donated to four local organizations - the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western New York, Cornerstone Manor, Harvest House, and the Salvation Army After School Program. The groups will distribute the books to those children who most need them. Williams said they can use books for children as old as early teens and as young as babies. Williams said children can never be too young to get their very own book.

The book drive will run through November 10. Collection boxes are at all UB libraries and at 42 buildings on all three campuses. You can find more information at UB Professional Staff Senate.
