Buffalo, NY – Some elected leaders are talking about the need for another stimulus package to help give the struggling economy another boost. But Internal Revenue Services officials say there are still many people who never claimed their first stimulus check.
According to the IRS there are an estimated 16,000 people who have not filed to get their $300 stimulus payment.
The money went out to most United States citizens who qualified months ago. But IRS spokesman Kevin McKeon said many of these other folks don't realize they are eligible. He said they are seniors and disabled veterans who don't normally have to file a tax return. He said during such tough economic times it is especially important that those who need the money most aren't left out.
The deadline is Wednesday for filing a return to receive a stimulus check. McKeon said there is help out there for those who don't know what to do.
There is a taxpayer assistance center at 130 South Elmwood in Buffalo. Assistance is also available at the volunteer tax help site, the Buffalo Federation of Neighborhood Centers. People can call 853-8600 for an appointment.
Once again the deadline to file is October 15 - that is this Wednesday.
