Buffalo, NY – WBFO presents another story that was recorded at StoryCorps in Buffalo this summer. Gary Witkowski has an interesting profession. He's a hatter. He makes hats.
When he first started in the hat business, Gary was told to change his last name to White. The feeling was people wouldn't want to buy a hat from someone with a Polish surname. Gary didn't like that. But he went on to sell more hats than anyone at the Buffalo store where he worked. Gary then asked someone in the business if he could be taught how to actually make hats.
