Address Change in Works for Ballpark to Honor Griffin

Buffalo Bisons

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – Buffalo lawmakers could be another step closer to renaming the downtown ballpark in honor of former Mayor James Griffin.

The Common Council's Legislation Committee held a public hearing Tuesday at City Hall. That is where they discussed the designation of 275 Washington Street in honor of former Mayor Griffin.

Griffin played a major role in getting the ball park built. He was the longest serving Buffalo Mayor. Griffin died in May.

At Tuesday's hearing, South District lawmaker Michael Kearns says the Buffalo Bisons and U.S. Postal Service have agreed to change Dunn Tire Park's address to One-James D. Griffin Plaza.

Kearns has been leading the effort to rename the park after Griffin. But Kearns says right now it is financially too difficult to find someone to pay for the revenues involved in the naming rights.

The Council's legislation committee recommends the full-council approve the renaming of the ball Park's Washington address at next Tuesday's session.
