Gaughan Proposes Merger of Erie County Villages into Neighboring Towns

By Amanda Tourot and Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – Regionalism advocate Kevin Gaughan wants to merge each of the 16 Erie County villages into their surrounding towns by the year 2012. He unveiled his proposal Wednesday at the Habour Club Restaurant in HSBC Arena.

Gaughan, who has spent eight months travelling to each town, village and city in the county, says it's a reasonable goal that will benefit taxpayers.

When he embarked on his tour of the county's towns and villages, Gaughan asked each governing board to reduce their size by two. A few complied.

Gaughan holds no official standing to demand a dissolution of village governments. He has been pushing a regionalism agenda for more than ten years now.
