Jamestown, NY – Governor David Paterson says the state will invest up to $6 million for a new coal-fired power plant in Jamestown. He says the plant would be the first of its kind to use new technology that captures carbon dioxide and sends it underground for permanent storage.
During an appearance in Jamestown Tuesday, Paterson said the plant would address global climate change while creating what he called clean-tech' jobs. He says it's now up to the federal government to provide the financial resources for the $100 million project.
But critics say the power plant is ill-advised, both environmentally and economically. They say the technology is unproven and that it's foolish of Paterson to earmark state funding before the completion of an environmental review process.
