Amherst, NY – Benderson Development hopes its new plans for the old Buffalo shooting Club in Amherst will finally meet the town's approval. But residents say it is still the wrong development, at the wrong time and in the wrong place.
The company unveiled a revised proposal Thursday for its multi-use development on the 34 acre site. The scope of the $44 million, so-called mixed use lifestyle center was scaled back and enhanced.
The contaminated site would be fully remediated and a public park was added along Maple. And Benderson officials they would abide by deed restrictions to prevent any big box development. Vice President Eric Recoon said they have worked tirelessly to reassure everyone the project is good for the community.
But Donna Lea Rd. resident Stanley Namulik said a poor economy doesn't bode well for the future of retail. And he said there is enough of past good intentions already standing vacant nearby to tell him what could lie ahead.
He also cites concerns over flooding in a town still struggling with over developed wetlands and sinking homes. Judy Ferraro is another Donna Lea Rd. resident who objects to the request for "spot zoning." She said residents at least should be involved in the process.
Results of a survey released by Benderson does show some growing support among residents. And the chamber of commerce is behind the plan that would add roughly $1.6 million to the tax rolls.
The Amherst town board has been divided over the rezoning needed for the project to move forward. A vote is expected Monday.
