Peace Corps Recruiting Older Americans

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – Representatives of the Peace Corps are in the Buffalo area recruiting people who are at the end of their careers than at the beginning.

When President John F. Kennedy created the Peace Corps in 1961, the agency was designed to give real life experience in the developing world to young college graduates. There's never been an age limit to participate in the Peace Corps. But recruiter Merle Rubine says they're now looking to attract older Americans.

Rubine points out that needs have changed. Developing countries are no longer as reliant on assistance in learning how to farm. She says they now need business expertise.

The Peace Corps will hold a recruiting session Thursday night at 6:00 at the downtown library.
