Buffalo, NY – Warnings of a street gang initiation rite were issued Wednesday by Buffalo police, based on what they say is credible information.
Text messages and e-mails indicate a national gang is holding initiations. Commissioner McCarthy Gipson says gang hopefuls would bump other vehicles, and then attack the driver when they stop.
Gipson says the gang has international roots, but declined further comment. But reports identified the gang as "MS13" or "MSX3."
Gipson for motorists to beware of rear-end collisions. He said people should not stop but go to a well-lit area where other people are present. They should remain in their vehicle and call 9-1-1, if possible.
No incidents were reported Wednesday night.
The initiation information was also received in North Carolina and Florida. Some police are dismissing it as an urban legend.
